Nature Play Area at Buffalo Bayou Park

By Shayla Kuykendall October 7, 2017

We are constantly hearing about how kids need to get moving or be more active. Well, at the Barbara Fish Daniel Nature Play Area, kids can do just that as they interact with nature. Located on the north bank of Buffalo Bayou Park, the 1.5-acre play area encompasses a boulder rock scramble, a rolling lawn, a stream and waterfall, climbing logs and stones, and a 33-foot slide. The tri-level tree house/boat deck with climbing net is also a significant part of the play area.

With these different features, you can see why the play area is one of the park’s most popular attractions. The play area is uniquely designed to motivate children to be creative and adventurous while having fun. And guess what? There is no shame in getting dirty at this park. The most important thing to remember is there are no limits-kids can sit, walk, run, or climb. As long as kids are able to use their imagination, anything goes at this park. The area is typically for children ages 3 to 7.

The entrance of the play area has two levels. Parents will have to keep up with their kids because the 33-foot slide is one of the elements to get them to another level fast. But the neat thing about the two levels is that it makes kids feel like they are climbing a tree as they are walking. More additions of the play area include a tunnel, colorful drum posts, metal chimes, and a water table. The table is a cool feature because kids can play in the mud beneath the table.

So many things contribute to a child’s development and this play area assists them by naturally developing their mind. Take the play area’s sand pit for instance; the logs are arranged like a teepee…what an adventure for kids as they climb and interact with other kids!

Before you end your trip, you may want to visit the play area’s picnic pavilion. The pavilion can also be used for special events and birthday parties. So remember, if you are going to Buffalo Bayou Park, head towards The Water Works and the Lee and Joe Jamail Skatepark and discover the Nature Play Area. Parents have easy access to parking and restrooms. It is open Monday – Sunday from 7:00 am – 8:00 pm.
