The BFG Movie Review

By Syneetra A. Williams July 27, 2016

If you enjoy animated movies, get ready for yet another Disney fantasy adventure. The BFG is a movie that deals with the human condition in a moving way.

Sophie, (Ruby Bamhill), is a precocious 10-year old growing up in an orphanage in England who suffers from insomnia. She reads under her blanket by a flashlight when she can’t sleep. According to her, the witching hour begins at 3 a.m. During this time, the boogie-man comes out, and people go missing. Suddenly, she hears movement in the courtyard. As she approaches the balcony to check out the disturbance, she sees a gigantic shadow emerge. She runs back to her bed to hide under the covers, and an enormous hand reaches through her window and captures her! She gets whisked away to the giant country.

The massive stranger — voiced by Mark Rylance — speaks bad English. However, he is friendly, gentle, and lovable. Nicolas Nickleby is his name but Sophie would rather call him BFG for a big friendly giant. He protects her from the other cruel man-eating giants and in return, she saves his life.

This heartwarming tale reminds us of the value of friendships and family, especially those of the unlikely sort. Also, there is a great deal to be said about having peace-of-mind. The simple things in life bring the most pleasure such as good food, a good night sleep, and sweet dreams.

Bring some tissue because the tender moments will move you. The kiddos will enjoy this one too. There are some powerful lessons about life woven throughout the story that your youngsters will understand. The colors are vivid, the rich textures will amaze you. The facial expressions are realistic. For instance, you will notice the crow’s feet around the BFG’s eyes when he smiles. The definition on his forehead gets pronounced when he is worried, speaks, or laughs. You can watch this movie in 3D or in the traditional format. The BFG is a giant in more ways than one!
