Children are Vulnerable to Damaging Sun Rays

Children love playing outdoors on beautiful sunny days. It’s even better when they have the opportunity to swim, play at the park, ride a bike or just enjoy happy days with family and friends. For children, enjoying the sunshine is one of the most invigorating and simple ways to have fun. With very little preparation, families can make lasting memories anywhere the sun shines.

As exciting as fun in the sun can be, it’s important to take precautions to properly protect your skin from the sun’s rays. Children are especially vulnerable to damaging rays because they often don’t realize when their delicate skin has become sore from too much sun. The best way to protect your child’s skin when enjoying a beautiful day outside is to use sunscreen.

Without sunscreen, it takes only 15 minutes for the sun’s UV rays to damage your child’s skin. When you see your child’s skin beginning to change colors, take a break from the sun to prevent further burning. Sunburn can even happen on cool days because the damage is from the sun’s rays not the temperature.

Here are a few sunscreen tips to help you protect your child’s skin when enjoying sunny days outdoors:

  • Use sunscreen with at least SPF 30, or more for fair skin, and UVA and UVB protection when your child plays outdoors.

  • Apply sunscreen at least 30 minutes before your child goes outdoors.

  • Remember to protect the nose, ears, lips, and feet.

  • Carry sunscreen with you so you are always ready to protect your child’s skin.

  • Apply sunscreen before and during a swimming activity.

  • Follow the package instruction for children and infants under 6 months old.

  • Pay attention to any skin reactions that your child may have. Only use products that are best suited for your child’s skin.

  • Remember, sunscreen may not protect your child’s skin if too much time is spent in the sun. Always pay attention to any sign of skin problems and find a place in the shade to better protect your child from the sun’s UV rays.
