The Secret Life of Pets Movie Review

By Syneetra A. Williams July 27, 2016

Have you ever wondered about what your cat, dog, or bird does all day while you are working? Well, Illumination Entertainment is ratting them out in this funny tell-all fantasy about what your furry family members are doing and who they hang out with.

New York City will never be the same with these furry characters unleashed. Max — voiced by Louis C.K. —  has a happy and comfortable life. It’s suddenly disrupted when his loving owner Katie brings home Duke — voiced by Eric Stonestreet — from the pound to join their family as his brother. A sibling rivalry war is declared by Max after Duke tries to get too comfortable. He plots to get rid of Duke by destroying Katie’s apartment and blaming Duke for the damages. Max hopes that Katie will see the mess and oust Duke immediately.

The wacky adventure begins when Katie’s irresponsible neighbor take Max, Duke, Buddy, Mel and others for a walk and somehow doesn’t notice that Max and Duke are no longer with the pack. Well, they are scooped up by the animal control unit. It takes a cute little bunny rabbit named Snowball — voiced by Kevin Hart — to break them out. He then inducts them into his sewer gang. They are obligated to join as a form of appreciation for being rescued from the city pound. Now they must get away from the sinister Snowball and his evil plans and back home before Katie arrives from work.

Get ready to laugh. The voices, gestures, and zany comments that come from these critters will keep you and the kids entertained. The music pops too. Acceptance, compassion, and friendship develop and thrive in this film. This is for children, but adults will enjoy this story.

The character’s personalities are true to their breed. Pops is an old half-blind Basset Hound and is wheelchair confined. He knows New York City like the back of his paw. His owner travels so he runs a pool hall in his apartment. Gidget is an overly cheerful and bouncy Pomeranian who wears a pink bow and has large bright eyes. She is in love with Max and determined to find him. Chloe is a fat, lazy cat who raids the refrigerator. She is nonchalant about everything. She will quickly admit that she doesn’t care. And then, there is that mangy, emaciated cat with a British accent, who lives in a garbage can in the alley at the back of the apartment buildings. He is not a nice kitty and utterly refuses to help locate Max and Duke.

Overall, this movie is quite funny. If you love comedies, then you will love The Secret Life of Pets. Be sure to put this one on your movies list. Don’t be surprised if you have second thoughts about your furry pal’s habits when you are away after watching The Secret Life of Pets.
