Finding Dory Movie Review

By Syneetra A. Williams June 29, 2016

After 13 years of waiting, Disney ∙ PIXAR’s Finding Dory is finally here! This heartwarming movie is a must-see for everyone. If you liked Finding Nemo, then you will love Finding Dory. In Finding Nemo, Marlin, Nemo’s father with the help of Dory, went on a search for Nemo who was captured by an Australian diver after being disobedient. The story had a happy ending when Nemo and Marlin were reunited.

This story contrasts with its predecessor in that Dory, a forgetful, friendly, regal blue tang fish, who suddenly remembers that she has a family and wants to find them. She emotionally solicits the help of clownfish, Marlin, and Nemo who agree to join her. Along the way, she encounters some laughable characters who are committed to helping her locate her parents.

Dory’s short-term memory loss issues cause her to wander off into some dark and scary places. She consistently gets side-tracked. And, she babbles on and on about various topics. Her friends are there to help her remember important things and stay focused on every step of her journey. Despite the fact that she can’t recall what just happened, she is knowledgeable. For instance, she knows that an octopus has three hearts.

Dory meets Hank, the cantankerous octopus who is missing a tentacle and can change his appearance in an instant. Other characters include the comedic sea lions and Becky the cocked-eyed kooky loon, who pecks Marlin until he gives her an eye-to-eye commanding stare. Destiny, Dory’s pipe-pal, is a near-sighted whale-shark who’s always bumping into things, is full of compassion. She taught Dory how to speak whale. Destiny’s buddy Bailey, the beluga whale, is low on confidence. But, when he meets Dory he is inspired by her determination.

All of these loveable characters have a disability. In spite of their imperfections, they work together as a team. Through some tearful and tender moments, they bond. The animations display vivid colors, textures, and striking facial expressions that look almost human. Their movements are smooth and swift. The fish swim like real fish, and the musical score is fitting. The water sounds will give you the feeling of being in the ocean next to Dory. The 3D effects put the scenes right in your lap.

According to Michael Stocker, a supervising animator, with Pixar Animation Studios, it took four years to bring Dory to the big screen. “My favorite animal in the world, even before Dory is the octopus,” said Stocker. “They are amazing creatures. I love Hank, I’m very proud of that character. It took almost two years to build the model for Hank.” Stocker admits that his work is both exciting and frustrating at the same time. “When everything comes together, it’s a high-five moment.”

Although technology has changed greatly since Finding Nemo, according to Stocker, the films themselves dictate the technology that is used for animated movies. “The lighting is richer and the depth-of-field is greater in Finding Dory,” said Stocker. ”

Overall, this movie is well designed, the plot is interesting, and the voice-acting is poignant. This epic adventure will keep you amazed and make you laugh. Some of the tender moments will move you.
