Harriet the Spy Now At Main Street Theater

Theater Review

By Madison Sowell April 26, 2016

Main Street Theater presents Harriet the Spy, and this is a play your kids won’t want to miss!

Harriet the Spy tells the energetic tale of Harriet, a sixth grader who is determined to one day become a writer/spy, and she’s doing everything she can to get as much practice in now. She explores the world around her and keeps tabs on everyone in her secret journal, filled with her personal observations. Harriet has fun with her friends and her nanny, Golly, until one day Golly must leave because Harriet is old enough to take care of herself. Like she always has before, Golly encourages Harriet to continue writing things down and promises to get an autographed copy of her first book.

However, this life change causes Harriet to become too depressed to snoop well, and she gets caught spying and then loses her trusty notebook to her worst enemy, Marion, who starts reading all of Harriet’s personal observations about her friends and neighbors to everyone. Even Harriet’s friends think that some of her thoughts are hurtful and turn their backs on her while Harriet’s classmates begin to ostracize her.

After becoming the victim of bullying and letting her grades drop, Harriet begins to fight back with some pranks of her own, only to get sent to a therapist after things get out of hand quickly. Only after the return of Golly does Harriet begin to make things right when she receives some well-needed advice. She apologizes to her friends and classmates and eventually becomes editor of the class paper, getting one step closer to achieving her dream of becoming a professional writer.

With a lively cast and colorful props and sets, this play teaches the importance of telling the truth without hurting other’s feelings and how to deal with growing up to be the person you want most to be. Watching a character like Harriet be so passionate about what she wants to do is inspiring to all ages, and audiences will grow to appreciate Harriet’s struggles, mistakes, and accomplishments in her journey to best understand the world around her.

Main Street Theater is presenting Harriet the Spy on Saturdays at 1 and 4 pm: May 7, 14, 21, and is open to the public now!
